Sweethearts and Orphans time again, and the North Texas Chapter of the
Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club wants you to join us for another great orphan
show! After five great years in
Granbury, Texas, Sweethearts and Orphans VI will be held in Waxahachie, Texas,
from February 18-20, 2005. The Waxahachie folks are going all out for us
and this historic city should provide an exceptional backdrop for our
meet.
Registration
will open at the host hotel on Friday morning (February 18) around 10:00
AM. At 2:00 PM on Friday, we'll go on a driving tour to many of the
beautiful and historic homes of Waxahachie. Waxahachie was the center of
Texas' cotton industry and the city is filled with some of the largest and most
beautiful circa-1890 to 1900 homes you'll ever see. A number of major
movies, including Places in the Heart, were shot in Waxahachie to take
advantage of its turn-of-the-20th-century look and feel. There will be
great photo ops for the cars! Maybe we’ll have a little surprise to throw
into the event as well. Friday night will be a relaxed evening with no events
planned, so you can renew acquaintances around the spacious lobby and large
meeting room of the host hotel.
From
9:00 AM to 3:00 PM on Saturday, the cars will be on display on the Waxahachie
town square surrounding the historic Ellis County Courthouse, widely acclaimed
as the most beautiful in Texas. The square is also home to many
antique shops, galleries, boutiques, restaurants and taverns. There are even
some craft shops offering "hands on" seminars in mosaics and
quilting. Something for everyone!
On
Saturday evening, we'll be attending a live country music performance featuring
the Mark David Manders Band at the Texas Music Theater. The theater, which was
originally built as a burlesque hall in 1902, has been refurbished and reopened
recently. It has great acoustics and is becoming well-known for
presenting rising young stars in country music as well as veteran acts with
great local followings.
On
Sunday morning at 9:00 AM, we'll have our awards presentation and door prize
drawings at the host hotel, and we'll have you on the road and headed back home
around 10:00 AM.
The
Holiday Inn Express will be our host hotel.
This is a brand new hotel with lots of amenities. The room rate includes
an “enhanced breakfast menu”, which includes biscuits and gravy, bacon, and
other items not usually included in a continental breakfast package. The rate is $74 per night for standard rooms
(either king or two queen beds) and $94 for suites. There is plenty of parking at the hotel and we are arranging an
overflow parking area for trailers should the lot fill up. We have blocked 25 rooms for Thursday,
February 17, and 50 rooms for Friday and Saturday night. There are lots of restaurants and other
shopping areas nearby.
Please
make your reservations early. The bloc can only be held until February 1. The hotel is located at the intersection of
Highway 287 and Highway 77 on the north side of Waxahachie, about 25 miles
south of Dallas. Make reservations by

them you’re with Sweethearts and Orphans, as reaching a percentage of our room
bloc is a condition for use of the meeting areas.
As
always, Sweethearts and Orphans is a not-for-profit meet with all proceeds
going to the American Heart Association.
